With the art world as the battleground, this project shows that algorithms are as subjective as our own human gut-feeling.

In my project: An algorithms’ introduction in the white cube, I did several attempts to unite the subjective art world with the so-called objective world of big data and algorithms. The eventual project consists of three different experiments that correlate with each other:

I. The Initiator: an algorithm that suggests new, successful works of art.

II. The Curator: an object-detection algorithm trained to be subjective. Normally such an algorithm is able to recognize dogs, tables and cars for example. I trained it to recognize things as beauty and melancholy.

III. An interactive app that gives the user insight in how (object-detection) algorithms learn. With the art world as my battleground, my aim is to show that algorithms are as subjective as our own human gut-feeling.
